IFI Horrorthon 2015

IFI Horrorthon’s 18th edition once again presents the best of new Irish and international work in a programme sure to satisfy casual viewers and hardcore devotees alike.

HORRORTHON GUESTS:
Director Richard Stanley will present his two features and a selection of his rarely shown shorts. Caroline Munro, scream queen, Hammer regular, Bond girl, and star of two tribute screenings, will also attend. Sean Hogan and legendary illustrator Kevin O’Neill will be present for the screening of Future Shock! The Story Of 2000AD.

HORRORTHON HONOURS: CHRISTOPHER LEE

Following last year’s celebration of Vincent Price, Horrorthon Honours this year focuses on Christopher Lee, one of cinema’s most iconic figures, and the star of some of the greatest horror films ever made. The festival will present The Hound Of The Baskervilles on 35mm (Friday 23rd, 13.00) and Dracula A.D. 1972 (Monday 26th, 17.00).

When Will and his girlfriend attend his ex-wife’s dinner party, they quickly realise the ulterior motives behind her seeming kindness in this tense and unnerving thriller.

The breakdown of a late-night train during a full moon forces the passengers to band together as an unseen presence begins to pick them off.

TURBO KID (22.50)

In post-apocalyptic 1997, one brave Kid stands up to evil overlord Zeus (Michael Ironside) in this gory riotous and endearing homage to ‘80s action movies. his is your one and only chance to see this gem on the big screen. A real crowd pleaser.

CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT (23.00)

A journalist discovers a remote orphanage populated by child vampires, who are being groomed to eradicate humanity, and the organisation dedicated to stopping them.

MANIA (23.00)

A guest at last year’s festival, Jessica Cameron’s second feature sees a lesbian couple fleeing across America after a brutal murder in their hometown.

HORRORTHON HONOURS CHRISTOPHER LEE: THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (13.00)

Lee plays the endangered Sir Henry Baskerville, watched over by Peter Cushing’s Sherlock Holmes in Terence Fisher’s adaptation of the detective’s most famous adventure.

LAST GIRL STANDING (14.50) Dust Devil

The bleak Last Girl Standing follows Camryn as she attempts to deal with the guilt of being the sole survivor of a massacre five years previously.

DUST DEVIL (16.45)

A distinctive and underappreciated film, filled with ideas, Dust Devil follows Wendy, who is being pursued by a mysterious shape-shifter who preys on the lonely.

Director Richard Stanley will introduce the film and take part in a post-screening Q&A.

GOODNIGHT MOMMY (19.10)

Two young twin boys become increasingly convinced that the woman returning home from hospital, face hidden under surgical bandages, is no longer their mother. Easily one of the most anticipated horror films this year.

The Serpent and the RainbowDEATHGASM (21.10)

This irreverent and very funny New Zealand ode to heavy metal horror sees an ancient entity summoned by two high school guitarists, with serious consequences. Another crowd pleaser not to be missed.

TRIBUTE TO WES CRAVEN: THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW & THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS (23.00)

Screening in memory of horror maestro Wes Craven, this double bill highlights two of his lesser celebrated films, each deserving of greater recognition.

WORRY DOLLS (23.00)

Worry Dolls sees a notorious serial killer’s collection of talismans spreading an ancient curse in a peaceful town, causing a series of random and horrific murders.

FEED THE DEVIL (23.10)

Outsiders who trespass on Native American land while chasing easy money face the consequences in Feed The Devil, as myth becomes terrifying reality.

The safety of a couple’s new-born son is put at risk when the denizens of the forest surrounding their home are disturbed in this atmospheric chiller. 

EMELIE (16.45)

Babysitter Anna subjects her charges to an escalating series of psychological torments, malicious and often perverse, in this tense and genuinely discomfiting debut feature.

ScreamFUTURE SHOCK! THE STORY OF 2000AD (18.30)

The history of cult comic 2000AD, home of Judge Dredd, is traced from inception to present in this definitive and engaging documentary.

Producer Sean Hogan and artist Kevin O’Neill will introduce the film and take part in a post-screening Q&A.

THE GREEN INFERNO (21.00)

Eli Roth’s most extreme film, The Green Inferno follows a group of students whose plane crash leaves them at the mercy of a tribe of savage cannibals.

TRIBUTE TO WES CRAVEN: SCREAM (23.00)

Following The Last House On The Left and A Nightmare On Elm Street, Craven redefined the genre for a third time in this post-modern classic.

THE DEVIL’S WOODS (23.00)

In an attempt to salvage their relationships, a group of friends enjoy a weekend of camping in a rural village with a dark history.

SCHERZO DIABOLICO (23.10)

A bored accountant kidnaps his boss’ teenage daughter, but is unprepared for the brutal vengeance she seeks following her release from captivity.

RICHARD STANLEY SHORTS PROGRAMME (13.00)

This collection of rarely-seen work from the director comprises The Sea Of Perdition, The Mother Of Toads, Children Of The Kingdom, and documentary The White Darkness.

Marking a notable debut for its director, Hardware sees a young sculptor in a post-nuclear future trapped in her apartment with a killer robot.

HORRORTHON HONOURS CHRISTOPHER LEE: DRACULA A.D. 1972 (17.00)

This Hammer classic reunites Lee and Peter Cushing. Dracula roams 1970s London, eager to take revenge on the descendants of his old nemesis, Van Helsing.

Actress Caroline Munro will introduce the film and take part in a post-screening Q&A.

RABID DOGS (19.10)

This remake of a Mario Bava film sees three desperate criminals take their hostages on a violent and chaotic road trip following a bungled heist.

CLOSING FILM – TALES OF HALLOWEEN (21.00)

Halloween night sees suburban residents terrorised by an assortment of supernatural creatures in this excellent anthology, sure to end this year’s festival on a high note.
